Braces are more comfortable and subtle than ever before.

Choosing the Right Type of Braces for Your Needs

At our practice, we recognize that your health and cosmetic needs are unique, and that you will respond to treatment differently from every other patient. When choosing the right type of braces for you, Dr. Trulove will take several factors into consideration, including:

  • Tooth and jaw alignment
  • Goals for treatment
  • Aesthetic preferences
  • Age
  • Budget
  • Lifestyle

When you or your child come in for your initial consultation, you should come prepared to ask plenty of questions and voice any concerns that you may have. With your full participation, Dr. Trulove can make a more accurate treatment recommendation.

All three treatments can be effective, but the right one for you will depend on your health needs, degree of correction, your budget, and personal preferences.

Traditional Braces Deliver Proven Effectiveness

Traditional braces are the most common option. These appliances are made of high-grade stainless steel brackets, which will attach to your teeth. Dr. Trulove will then connect an archwire to each of the brackets, which will apply gentle force on your teeth. Over the course of treatment (usually 18 to 24 months), the pressure will gradually shift your teeth so that you can enjoy a straighter, healthier smile.

Today’s metal braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more attractive than those of past years. Traditional braces may be appropriate if you have moderate to severe misalignment. They can also be a good option if you are on a budget, as they are typically more affordable than other options.

Ceramic Braces Offer a Dose of Subtlety

Ceramic braces function similarly to traditional metal braces. However, they are much more discreet, making them the most popular choice for adults. At our practice, we offer self-litigating ceramic braces. These devices do not require rubber o-ties to secure the wire, which can become stained over time.

If you have moderate to severe dental misalignment, but you are concerned about the look of braces, ceramic braces may be the best solution. It is important to note that ceramic braces are more fragile than metal. Therefore, you may not qualify for this treatment if you have a deep overbite or other severe alignment issue.

Invisalign®, a Convenient and Discreet Option

Invisalign® is by far the most inconspicuous type of braces. As an Invisalign® patient, you will wear clear plastic aligner trays, which will be almost impossible to see, even at a close distance. Dr. Trulove will carefully design your aligners based on precise images taken of your mouth. Each set in the series will have a different shape, to place a slight force on your teeth.

As with traditional braces, the pressure will realign your dental arches. However, Invisalign® typically exerts less pressure than metal wires, and most patients find this treatment to be a more comfortable option. Invisalign® is typically most appropriate if you have mild to moderate misalignment.

Dr. Trulove also proudly offers Invisalign Teen®. During a consultation, he can determine whether Invisalign Teen® might be an effective treatment for your teenager.
